Golf Cart Won’t Start? Don’t Tow It – Call Galaxy Golf Cars Instead

You walked out to your cart, turned the key, and nothing happened. Maybe there’s a click. Maybe there’s total silence. Either way, your first instinct might be to call a tow truck and haul it to a shop. Before you do that — stop. There’s a better option, and it costs you a lot less than a tow.

Here’s what’s probably wrong with your cart, what you can check yourself, and why Galaxy Golf Cars’ mobile service team is almost always the smarter call.

Why Your Golf Cart Won’t Start — The Most Common Reasons

The most common reasons a golf cart won’t start are dead or weak batteries, a faulty solenoid, corroded battery connections, or a blown fuse. The good news is that most of these can be diagnosed and fixed on-site — no towing required.

1. The Battery

This is the first place to check. Like any electric vehicle, the batteries are the primary source of power for your cart and the most common root cause of starting problems. For electric carts, you need at least 70% charge for the cart to operate properly.

If your cart has been sitting for a few weeks without being plugged in, a deeply discharged battery might not even trigger your charger to turn on. Automatic chargers need minimum voltage to detect the batteries — if your pack is too low, the charger simply won’t activate. This is the number one cause of a cart that appears completely dead.

2. Corroded or Loose Battery Connections

Even if the battery has a full charge, loose or corroded terminals, a faulty solenoid, or blown fuses can prevent the cart from starting. Corrosion is especially common in North Texas where heat and humidity accelerate battery terminal buildup. Always inspect the wiring connections and key components before assuming the worst.

3. The Solenoid

The solenoid transfers power from the battery to the motor. If you hear a clicking sound but the cart won’t start, the solenoid may be malfunctioning. Inspect for corrosion, loose connections, or damage — if it’s faulty, it will need to be replaced.

4. A Blown Fuse

Fuses are one of the most common causes of cart failure on both electric and gas-powered carts. When a fuse stops working, electricity can no longer pass through it — which means your starter won’t work and the cart won’t start. The fuse box is usually located under the seat or near the battery compartment and is the first thing worth checking before moving on to anything else

5. The Ignition Switch or Forward/Reverse Switch

If turning the key produces no response and the dashboard lights don’t come on, the ignition switch may be faulty. Try jiggling the key or inspecting the wiring around the switch. The forward/reverse switch can also prevent the cart from starting if it gets stuck or experiences internal failure — even when the lights are working fine.

6. The Controller

The controller is the brain of your golf cart, regulating power distribution to the motor. If your cart stops suddenly, behaves erratically, or is completely unresponsive, the controller might be the culprit. Controller issues are harder to self-diagnose and almost always require a technician with the right diagnostic tools.

What You Can Check Yourself Before Calling Anyone

Before you call us – or anyone – here are three quick checks worth doing:

Look at your charge indicator. If it’s reading empty or very low, plug in and wait 30 minutes before trying again.

Check your battery terminals. If you see white or greenish buildup around the terminals, that corrosion could be breaking the circuit. A wire brush and some terminal cleaner can sometimes solve this immediately.

Check the run/tow switch. Many electric carts have a run/tow switch under the seat. If it got bumped to the tow position, the cart won’t move no matter what you do.

If none of those fix it, it’s time to call someone who can actually diagnose the issue properly.

Why Towing Is Usually the Wrong Move

In the DFW area, towing base rates typically fall between $75 and $125 for a local tow, with per-mile charges added after the first 5 to 10 miles. After-hours, weekend, or holiday tows carry a 25% to 50% surcharge on top of that. By the time you tow a cart from your Frisco or McKinney neighborhood to a shop across town, you’re easily looking at $100 to $200 or more — just for the transport — before anyone has even touched the cart.

And then it sits in a shop queue. Days go by. You still don’t have your cart back.

For most of the issues listed above, towing simply isn’t necessary. A qualified technician with the right tools and parts can diagnose and fix the majority of no-start problems right in your driveway.

What Galaxy Golf Cars Does Instead

Galaxy Golf Cars operates a fully equipped mobile service unit that comes directly to your home, community, or property across the DFW area. Our mobile technicians handle the most common no-start causes on-site — battery diagnostics and replacement, solenoid replacement, fuse inspection and repair, terminal cleaning, ignition and switch issues, and controller diagnostics.

We serve Plano, Frisco, Allen, McKinney, Prosper, Celina, Richardson, Little Elm, and surrounding Collin County communities. One call and we come to you — no tow truck, no drop-off, no sitting in a queue.

When to Call Us vs. When to Take It to a Shop

Call our mobile team first if:

● Your cart is at home or in a gated community

● The issue appeared suddenly with no prior warning

● You’re hearing clicks, seeing error codes, or getting no response at all

A shop visit may make more sense if:

● Your cart needs major structural or body work

● The motor itself needs to be rebuilt or replaced

● You’ve already had a mobile visit and the issue requires more complex bench work

Even in those cases, call us first. We’ll give you an honest assessment on-site and tell you exactly what you need — and whether we can handle it where you’re parked.
